Representative body of the precast concrete industry the Concrete Manufacturers Association (CMA) says, it has decided to investigate the possibility of starting an independent mark scheme for its members in response to their battling to renew their South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) marks owing to backlogs and poor service, says CMA executive director Frans Minnaar. “While manufacturers are required to supply products that have the SABS mark, they face the predicament of being unable to supply their products as they have to wait for the SABS to renew their permits,” with manufacturers being in breach of contract if they supply concrete pipes without the necessary stamp of approval, he tells Engineering News.
