University of Pretoria (UP) Department of Chemistry water remediation expert Dr Alseno Kagiso Mosai has cautioned that young children in Krugersdorp are breathing in uranium, arsenic and mercury fumes wafting over from abandoned legacy mines, while pollutants are seeping into the groundwater and nearby dams and lakes. “If this is not treated now, the effects of legacy mines will continue and the impact will be much more severe. This means that the government will need large amounts of money to clean the water in order to bring it up to the standard needed for households,” he said on July 4.

2023 was a pivotal year for South Africa’s power sector, as unprecedented loadshedding undermined the economy and society, industry organisation the Energy Council of South Africa says. “We can confidently state that we have turned the corner on loadshedding. We have emerged stronger and better positioned to tackle the many sector reform challenges that now lie ahead,” adds Energy Council CEO James Mackay in a report on discussions at the organisation's 2024 AGM. 
Red Hill to earn into Peel’s Curnamona project

ASX-listed Red Hill Minerals has agreed to farm into and earn a 75% interest in the Curnamona project by spending A$6.5-million on exploration over five years. The project, held by Peel’s Peel Far West subsidiary, comprises the Curnamona tenements in New South Wales and the Anabama tenements in South Australia.
Aton reports promising gold finds after second round of drilling at Semna

TSV-X-listed Aton has reported “promising” results from its Phase 2 diamond drilling programme at the Semna gold mine in the Abu Marawat concession in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. The recently completed Phase 2 diamond drilling programme at Semna yielded several significant drill intersections from the eastern extension of the previously mined main vein. Drilling confirmed that high-grade mineralisation continues over a strike length of at least 500 m, with good mineralisation drilled in the easternmost hole.
Uranium oxide Niger govt takes back Madaouela mining right from GoviEx

The government of Niger has issued TSX-V-listed GoviEx Uranium with a letter, stating that it no longer has rights over the perimeter of the Madaouela mining permit. GoviEx operated the project and holds an 80% interest in the Nigerien operating company Comima, with the remaining 20% held by the Niger government, of which 10% represents a free-carry interest.

The former Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has failed to review South Africa’s fuel-pricing methodology since the process to do so was announced in 2022, says the Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA). In the 2022 Budget Review document, National Treasury said it and the DMRE would review the methodology to determine the fuel price.

The newest Ctrack Transport and Freight Index (Ctrack TFI) shows that the recent recovery in South Africa’s logistics sector continued in May, albeit at a slower pace. The index improved in May to reach a level of 125.6 – an increase of 1.7% compared with April’s level, and 2.5% above year-ago levels.
Safda, SA Canegrowers resolve sugarcane transformation funding dispute

Industry organisations the South African Farmers Development Association (Safda) and the South African Canegrowers Association (SA Canegrowers) have resolved their disagreement about transformation funding in the industry. Industry body the South African Sugar Association (SASA) had convened an urgent meeting to find a solution to the impasse, after which the organisations found common ground regarding the transformation funding matter, SASA independent chairperson advocate Fay Mukaddam says.
