State-owned power utility Eskom has achieved 100 consecutive days without loadshedding, which reflects the enhanced reliability and performance of its generation fleet. The continuous suspension of loadshedding has been achieved against a backdrop of a significant decrease in the use of open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) to supplement generation capacity.

Newmont exercises Antipa top-up right

Newcrest Operations, a subsidiary of global gold major Newmont, has exercised its top-up right to maintain an 8.6% shareholding in Western Australia-focused exploration company Antipa Minerals. Newmont’s participation will see Antipa issue an additional 54.15-million fully paid ordinary shares at A$0.01 a share to raise a further A$540 000. This will result in the total funds raised under the placement and top-up placement to A$6.25-million.

Australia approves South32’s Illawarra coal sale

The Australian Foreign Investment Review Board has approved the sale of diversified miner South32’s Illawarra metallurgical coal assets to an entity owned by Singapore’s Golden Energy and Resources (GEAR) and coal trader M Resources. The transaction, announced in March, will be completed in the first quarter of the 2025 financial year, said South32 on Friday.

Cyanide spill detected near Victoria Gold’s Eagle mine in Yukon

Canada’s Yukon Territory said elevated levels of cyanide were detected in a waterway near Victoria Gold’s Eagle Mine after an equipment failure and landslide at the site. Yukon Mining Minister John Streicker told local media on Thursday that the heightened cyanide concentrations were detected in a creek near the mine site, which “could potentially affect fish.” The comments come hours after Toronto-based Victoria Gold said it hasn’t detected elevated cyanide levels downstream of its property.
