Industry organisations the South African Farmers Development Association (Safda) and the South African Canegrowers Association (SA Canegrowers) have resolved their disagreement about transformation funding in the industry. Industry body the South African Sugar Association (SASA) had convened an urgent meeting to find a solution to the impasse, after which the organisations found common ground regarding the transformation funding matter, SASA independent chairperson advocate Fay Mukaddam says.

South African inflation expectations for the next two years declined, signalling progress in the central bank’s efforts to rein them in before its policy meeting later this month. Average inflation expectations two years ahead — which the bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) uses to inform its decision-making — fell to 4.9% in the second quarter from 5.2% previously, according to a survey released on Friday by the Stellenbosch-based Bureau for Economic Research (BER).

Australian coal stocks are headed for their best week in years after a fire shut down one of country’s major mines, with Morgan Stanley seeing further upside for the commodity. Whitehaven Coal is poised for a 17% weekly advance, its best since October 2022, with Sydney-listed Coronado Global Resources and Yancoal Australia posting similar gains. Coking coal futures in Singapore hit a two-month high earlier this week after a fire at Anglo American’s biggest metallurgical coal project in Australia halted production.

Electrical engineering company ProMarks and industrial conglomerate Trafigura have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Angola to conduct a technical and economic viability study and develop a public-private partnership model for a major regional power transmission and supply project. The proposed project will entail building and operating a 2 000 MW high-voltage electricity interconnector, which is a high-voltage direct current transmission line, to take surplus green electricity produced by hydroelectric dams located in the north of Angola to the Democratic Republic of Congo Copperbelt and Zambia, integrating with the Southern Africa Power Pool.

Over the course of April and May, an inflow of more than half a million ounces of platinum poured into exchange traded funds (ETF) holdings in the UK, the biggest since South Africa’s ETF initial public offering (IPO) on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange nearly a quarter century ago. “The more than half a million ounce inflow we saw into the UK ETFs is the biggest ever addition into any of the regional ETFs, with the exception of when, for example, the South African one was first set up.
