China's Tsingshan $1bn steel plant in Zimbabwe starts production

China's nickel giant Tsingshan Holding Group has started production at its $1-billion steel plant in central Zimbabwe, a company official said on Thursday. Tsingshan's Dinson Iron and Steel Company will produce 600 000 metric tons of carbon steel annually during the first phase of its operations, project director Wilfred Motsi told reporters during a tour of the plant.

China's coal imports from Russia rise to eight-month high in May

Russia's coal shipments to China rose to the highest level in eight months in May after Moscow suspended export duties, official data showed on Thursday. Russia's coal exports to China rose to 9.1-million metric tons in May, according to Chinese customs administration data. That was up 1.5% on the year and the highest level since September.

Barrick Gold said in a letter to the United Nations Human Rights Council on Thursday that allegations of human rights violations at its North Mara gold mine were "misdirected, unfounded" and "lacked substance". The UNHRC's special procedures branch had sent a letter to the Canadian gold miner in April, saying it had received information about allegations of killings, assault, torture, sexual abuse and violence against women and girls, among others, committed by security forces and private security contractors at the North Mara mine in northern Tanzania.

he Pathways Alliance, a group of Canada's biggest oil sands producers, has removed all content about environmental goals from its website and social media pages, citing "significant uncertainty" over the federal government's anti-greenwashing legislation. Bill C-59, which only needs royal assent to become law after Canada's parliament gave approval on Wednesday, would force companies to show proof of their environmental claims.

Forming part of its initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, iron-ore and nickel major Vale and mining equipment manufacturer Caterpillar have signed an agreement to test battery electric trucks and energy transfer systems, as well as to conduct studies on ethanol-powered trucks. This undertaking is aimed at decarbonising Vale’s mine operations, aiding in achieving its goals to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 33% and zeroing its net emissions by 2050.

The fifth anniversary of the Brumadinho tailings dam collapse serves as a “powerful reminder” to all mining industry stakeholders about the tragic consequences of accidents and highlights the need to remain focused on improving how tailings facilities are managed across the entire industry, reports mining industry body International Council for Mining and Metals (ICMM). A tailings dam collapsed at copper and nickel miner Vale’s Córrego do Feijao mine in Brumadinho, Brazil, in January 2019, resulting in multiple fatalities and triggering a global relook into tailings storage facility management and security.

An emerging trend in Latin America, and South America in general, is the shift from mining certain commodities to mining commodities that are more critical for the energy transition, such as copper, reports field research professional services firm Southern Pulse founder and managing partner Samuel Logan. “One of the trends that we’re noticing in Latin America, not just South America but [also in] the western hemisphere, is that mining companies that have 20, 30 and 40 years of experience in the business, focusing on gold and geological derivatives of gold, are retooling, shifting and looking at investing in copper.”
