111 employees, 1 130 contractor employees impacted by Sibanye gold operation restructuring

Multinational mining and metals processing group Sibanye-Stillwater has reported that 111 employees and 1 130 contractor employees have been retrenched as a result of the restructuring of its South African gold operations. Sibanye has concluded consultations with stakeholders in terms of Section 189A of the Labour Relations Act.
Fireblade Aviation prepares for growth in private aviation

Private aviation company Fireblade Aviation has positioned each of its divisions to grow as international demand for aviation resources increases, particularly private aviation over the past three to four years. "We are seeing an upward trend in international travellers, including from Asia and the Middle East in addition to growth in travellers from the US and Europe," Fireblade Aviation MD Leigh Kretzschmar said during a tour of its OR Tambo International Airport-based facilities on July 2.
Nersa plans to appeal High Court ruling in AfriForum ‘unlawful’ tariff increase case

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) plans to appeal a court order issued by the Pretoria High Court in a case brought forward by nonprofit civil rights organisation AfriForum. AfriForum submitted an urgent application to the court to prevent Nersa from proceeding with considerations on licenced electricity distributors’ tariff applications, including municipal and private distributors, for the 2024/25 financial year.

Dual-listed Ivanhoe Mines has announced the completion of construction and the restart of the Kipushi zinc/copper/lead/germanium mine, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 100 years after it first started operations, and 31 years since it was placed on care and maintenance. First feed of ore into the new concentrator was achieved on May 31, with first concentrate subsequently produced on June 14.
TotalEnergies plans to exit South African offshore gas finds

TotalEnergies plans to exit its discoveries of gas-condensate off the tip of South Africa to prioritize exploration in other areas closer to Namibia, according to people familiar with the matter. The French giant braved one of the fastest ocean currents in the world to drill off South Africa’s coast, spending at least $400 million to find an estimated 1 billion barrels equivalent of light liquid hydrocarbon at the Brulpadda field in 2019. It had further success at the Luiperd well the following year, but neither discovery has progressed to development.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has called for the immediate release of South African engineers Frederik Potgieter and Peter Huxham, declaring in a formal opinion that the detention of the two men in Equatorial Guinea is arbitrary and illegal. The UN decision is a material finding that definitively confirms Potgieter and Huxham’s innocence, and that their ongoing detention in Equatorial Guinea, which is a signatory to the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is a grave violation of various international human rights conventions, spokespersons for the engineers say.

Diamond miner Lucara Diamond Corp, which owns and operates the Karowe mine, in Botswana, has appointed Dr Lauren Freeman as mineral resources VP, with effective from July 1. Development of an innovative new mining method for narrow tabular steep dipping orebodies has reached an advanced stage after four years of effort. The reef boring machine that has already been put through its preliminary paces is viewed as having the potential to boost platinum group metals (PGM) grades through more selective mining, which then lowers unit costs, enhances safety, streamlines downstream materials – and looks like also conceivably being able to slash the size, risk and environmental impact of tailings storage facilities.
