South African private sector activity fell in June as output and new orders slipped on uncertainty over the outcome of an election held in May, a survey showed on Wednesday. The S&P Global South Africa Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 49.2 in June from 50.4 in May. A reading below 50 indicates contraction.

The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) has expressed surprise at government’s decision to introduce a 10% import duty and rebate on “photovoltaic cells assembled in modules or made up into panels” in the absence of consultations with domestic consumers. The trade measure has also been implemented ahead of the formal launch of the South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM), which is meant to guide the industrialisation of renewable-energy value chains. The launch of SAREM is believed to be imminent, with some of the contents of the plan having already been reported in the media.

Australian company Chalice Mining will collaborate with Japanese major Mitsubishi on the Gonneville platinum group element (PGE)/nickel/copper/cobalt project, in Western Australia. In terms of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), Chalice and Mitsubishi will explore the possibility of a potential binding partnership following the completion of a prefeasibility study (PFS) next year.

Anglo American is considering options to push ahead with a sale of its coal business after an explosion at its flagship Australian mine, including the possibility of selling individual assets or excluding the damaged operation from a potential deal. The plan to exit coal formed part of a dramatic restructuring program announced earlier this year by Anglo, as the London-based miner was trying to fend off a takeover pursuit by larger rival BHP Group.

Shares of Canadian miner First Quantum Minerals closed 5% higher on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday after Panama said it would conduct an environmental audit of the company's Cobre Panama mine to decide whether it can safely reopen. Panama's government ordered the closure of the Cobre Panama mine, one of the newest and biggest copper mines in the world, in December after protests calling for more environmental protections erupted across the country and a court ruling deemed the contract to run the mine unconstitutional.

Sibanye has concluded consultations with stakeholders in terms of Section 189A of the Labour Relations Act.
Fireblade Aviation prepares for growth in private aviation

Private aviation company Fireblade Aviation has positioned each of its divisions to grow as international demand for aviation resources increases, particularly private aviation over the past three to four years. "We are seeing an upward trend in international travellers, including from Asia and the Middle East in addition to growth in travellers from the US and Europe," Fireblade Aviation MD Leigh Kretzschmar said during a tour of its OR Tambo International Airport-based facilities on July 2.
