Magazine cover image Despite big obstacles, AfCFTA viewed as key to weaving new trade and industrial tapestry
Published: 28 Jun 24
In the grand tapestry of international commerce, Africa’s 55 nations have stood as individual threads rather than a unified fabric of economic opportunity. But a new era of collaboration being ushered in by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement promises to harness the continent’s vast potential and foster economic prosperity for its people. Launched in 2021, this African Union (AU) treaty aims to integrate the country’s economies through facilitating the easy, cheap flow of goods and services. Coupled with complementary measures such as the adoption of open visa policies, this will create a megamarket of 1.3-billion people, which, according to United Nations (UN) projections, will increase to about 2.5-billion people by 2050, with a corresponding surge in business and consumer spending from close to $3-trillion currently to about $16.12-trillion.

Published: 28 Jun 24
To address persistent mismatches between technical and vocational skills, and industry requirements, and meet future skills requirements for South Africa’s local green hydrogen economy, the industry needs to integrate “skills foresight approaches” throughout the skills development system, according to a policy recommendations report. Research institute South African Institute of International Affairs’ (SAIIA’s) ‘Training in Uncertainty: Skills Foresight for a Just Green Hydrogen Transition’ report, released last month, describes skills foresight as a structured process for anticipating future skills needs to inform present-day decision-making.
Hydrogen purification system in development
Published: 28 Jun 24
Ceramic technologies company NGK Insulators and industrial business multinational Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will jointly develop a hydrogen purification system that uses membrane separation to purify hydrogen from a hydrogen-nitrogen mixture produced during ammonia cracking processes. Ammonia is gaining recognition as a safe and efficient hydrogen carrier, facilitating large-scale hydrogen transport and storage. The companies anticipate that the purification system will contribute to the establishment of a hydrogen and ammonia supply chain, enabling high-volume transport.

Published: 28 Jun 24
Green hydrogen is hailed as critical for a low-carbon energy future, with Africa well-positioned to be a key player in this sector. However, realising the continent’s potential requires African governments’ intervention to derisk and encourage investments, according to global law firm A&O Shearman. The A&O Shearman team, comprising Africa group head and partner Tim Scales, energy and infrastructure partner Antoine Haddad, energy and infrastructure partner and project finance specialist Alessandra Pardini, London-based projects, energy, natural resources and infrastructure partner Troy Edwards and Johannesburg-based projects, energy, natural resources and infrastructure partner Alexandra Clüver, state that notable projects in Morocco, which could capture up to 10% of the global market, and initiatives in Mauritania, Djibouti, Namibia and South Africa, showcase Africa’s potential as a future global hub for green hydrogen production.
