Not-for-profit trade organisation, the Hot Dip Galvanizers Association of South Africa (HDGASA) implores its members to embrace the important role that steel can play in promoting a circular economy. “Hot dip galvanisers can contribute to the circular economy, moving away from the ‘take, make, dump and generate waste approach’ to one in which items are repurposed, conserving important resources and energy,” asserts HDGASA executive director Robin Clarke.

Ford South Africa (SA) has celebrated the assembly of the one-millionth Ranger at its Silverton plant in Pretoria. While the first million bakkies took 24 years, the second million is set to happen before the decade is out, should production continue at the current rate of roughly 200 000 units a year.

CEO confidence improves in the second quarter

Financial advisory company Merchantec's CEO Confidence Index increased by six points to 51.4 in the second quarter, driven by a significant improvement in confidence in the consumer staples sector and the recent absence of loadshedding. The index has experienced notable fluctuations over the past few years. In 2023, it started at 44.4, gradually climbed to 51.4 by year's end, and continued this upward trend into this year, starting at 45.4 in the first quarter.

Following the delivery of the front-end engineering design (FEED) study in February, the appointment of advisers to progress the financing of the project and the recent announcement regarding the 55% increase in mineral resources at the Tiris uranium project, in Mauritania, Aura Energy has announced five further steps towards development of the project. This includes the appointment of experienced West African project director Jan Booyse and his company, Project EQ, to lead the project development at Tiris; the appointment of Kenmore Mine Consulting to complete a mine plan optimisation review; the appointment of Lycopodium to oversee an optimisation and project enhancement study; the appointment of Knight Piésold Consulting to oversee water resource drilling in the abundant and proximate Taoudeni Basin; and the appointment of Bruce Harvey to review and update the company’s environment social governance (ESG) framework.

Entrepreneurial support organisation Endeavor South Africa says the South African remote work, or digital nomad, visa can help the local technology industry and entrepreneurs, and is a positive step towards positioning the country as a global hub for remote work, innovation and skills transfer. The visa, which came into effect on May 20 this year, will also contribute towards the economy, tourism and cultural exchange.

Amid growing global demand for various minerals, such as nickel and copper, and Africa’s endowment thereof, Vale Base Metals executive Mark Cutifani recently discussed the importance of responsible investment and leadership in the African mining sector, highlighting the need for ethical, efficient and effective business practices. Considering that the continent has an abundance of natural resources, such as water and arable land, Cutifani, during his keynote address at this year’s London Indaba, highlighted the potential of Africa’s natural resources in contributing to the development of the continent, as well as global development, while acknowledging the challenges of managing these resources sustainably and equitably.
