Addressing youth unemployment and the associated skills deficit are crucial for ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for the South African mining sector. The private-sector-led Youth Employment Service (YES) initiative plays a key role in this effort, aligning industry needs with the development of high-potential youth, says YES strategic research and marketing services head Simona Mazza. The mining industry continues to directly employ about 481 000 people, according to Statistics South Africa, and provides at least that many jobs in supporting industries, she elaborates. Further, the industry generates substantial government revenue through taxes and royalties.

Published: 14 Jun 24
Amid a challenging economic landscape marked by scarce job opportunities, platinum group metals (PGM) mining company Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats) remains committed to fostering local business growth and opening employment avenues for its host communities. “The primary challenge in South Africa is the high youth unemployment rate. There is no lack of talent or willing youth in South Africa, but rather a lack of job opportunities available to them,” says Implats corporate communication group head Alice Lourens.   She adds that the Southern Africa operating environment poses further hurdles, as the region is impacted on by persistent political and socioeconomic challenges, sluggish global growth, weakening local currencies, soaring inflation and interest rates, power and water disruptions and poor service delivery.
