The rise of new energy vehicles (NEVs), including hybrids, is driving demand for investment in modernised automotive manufacturing facilities, with Africa’s first automotive city, the Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone (Tasez), playing a key role in meeting this demand. Tasez says it is well aware of the ever-evolving landscape of the automotive manufacturing industry, with NEVs “just around the corner”, and stresses the necessity of embracing Fourth Industrial Revolution skills in manufacturing and developing a keen awareness of sustainable practices.

As reported by Engineering News Online on October 14, luxury vehicle company BMW Group South Africa officially started production of the fourth-generation BMW X3 at its Rosslyn plant in Tshwane, following a R4.2-billion investment. This facility is now the only one in BMW’s global network dedicated to producing the X3 as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). The article noted that the transition to the new model marked a significant milestone, as BMW continued its electrification journey.

State-owned airports management agency the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) CEO Mpumi Mpofu told media on December 12 that the fuel bypass line at the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) is expected to be fully implemented by February 2025. ACSA was building the almost 1-km-long bypass line to provide additional redundancy, with the outstanding component being the pipe, she said.

The recent Service Level Plan (SLP) signed between the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the City of Cape Town is not a devolution agreement, warns the rail agency. It says the agreement flows from Section 11 of the National Land Transportation Act, which entrusts municipalities with the function of preparing transport plans for the area under their control, ensuring compliance to these plans, while also enabling service level planning for passenger rail in consultation with PRASA.
Township economy Govt urges spaza shop owners to register businesses before deadline

With the registration deadline looming for small businesses, spaza shops and other food-handling convenience stores, government warned owners that if they missed the registration window their businesses would be closed. Owners are urged to register their businesses by the December 17 deadline.
