Liquid Intelligent Technologies extends its Botswana fibre network

Pan-African technology group Liquid Intelligent Technologies has completed its fibre network extension from Ramatlabama to Ramokgwebana. The enhanced independent network spans over 730 km, marking the first-ever direct connection from northern Botswana along the A1 road and bringing key towns, such as Francistown, Mahalapye and Palapye, into the fold.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has appointed FFS Tank Terminals as the preferred bidder to refurbish and maintain a liquid bulk terminal at the Port of Cape Town’s liquid bulk precinct. FFS will operate the terminal for a 25-year concession period, which is poised to improve overall volume throughput.
Midas substation repairs still under way, but essential load to mines restored

A 500 MVA transformer at the Midas substation, in Gauteng, tripped in the evening of December 11, disrupting electricity supply to about 15 mines in the Carletonville, Fochville and Potchefstroom areas, as well as to residential customers. State-owned utility Eskom says in a December 12 update that its technical teams acted swiftly and have managed to restore essential load to the mines, enabling limited operations.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which is the global representative body for the airline industry, has lamented the slower-than-hoped-for ramp-up of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) production during this year. South African food producer Premier Group has 1.1-billion rand ($60.91-million) available for acquisitions, it said on Tuesday, after reporting a 32.4% rise in interim profit. Already, the group, which vies for market share with rivals such as Tiger Brands, Pioneer Food and RCL Foods, in June acquired a 30% stake in rice importer Goldkeys International, to gain exposure to the market in the staple.

China is encouraging its electrical vehicle manufacturers to invest in South Africa as it seeks to broaden ties between the two nations. “We encourage the Chinese companies to consider, very seriously consider, to move some of their assembly lines or value added in South Africa,” the Asian nation’s ambassador to South Africa Wu Peng said in a Bloomberg interview in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

A South African court denied a bid by International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) to appeal a decision that temporarily stops the nation’s state-owned logistics firm from going ahead with its partnership with ICTSI to expand and run sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest container port. The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in October blocked the deal temporarily after an AP Moller-Maersk unit, APM Terminals, challenged the award. The court on Wednesday denied ICTSI’s right to appeal the so-called interdict against Transnet, the State’s ports and rail operator.

HSBC and the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC) will jointly provide funding to trade transactions valued at up to $1-billion, in a move to help fill a gap in financing for emerging market trade. IFC and HSBC said on Thursday they would equally share the risk on a portfolio of trade-related assets held by emerging-market banks in 20 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, according to a joint statement.
