In an effort to reduce its reliance on grid power and improve sustainability metrics, gold mining company DRDGOLD has completed a 60 MW solar PV power plant at its Ergo tailings reprocessing plant, on Gauteng’s East Rand, with 20 MW now operational, as well as commissioning a 160 MWh battery energy storage system. The facility generated more than 13.1-million kilowatt hours of energy during the 2024 financial year, amounting to 10% of Ergo’s consumption, the miner reported in August.

South African manufacturer Bell Equipment’s fleet of articulated dump trucks (ADTs) will play a crucial role in the construction of a massive 900 ha tailings facility for a gold mining company near Fochville, along Gauteng’s western border with North West province. This project, led by construction engineering company Stefanutti Stocks, will require moving 10-million cubic metres of earth, which includes 6.5-million cubic metres of fill material, 1.5-million cubic metres of cut material and 2-million cubic metres of topsoil to be preserved for later use.
Tailings streaming agreement concludes after 16 years

Last month, Harmony Gold Mining Company concluded the final delivery to the streaming agreement between gold-focused royalty and streaming company Franco-Nevada and its tailings retreatment operation Mine Waste Solutions (MWS). With this streaming agreement contract – starting on December 17, 2008 – completed, MWS's average gold price received will increase and will now be in line with market prices.
Mining industry vows to ‘push back strongly’ against Eskom tariff hikes

South Africa’s mining industry will “certainly push back strongly” against Eskom’s proposed tariff hikes, says Minerals Council South Africa chief economist Hugo Pienaar. If granted, Eskom’s tariff-hike application at the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for the 2025/26 financial year will see direct Eskom customers pay 36.15% more from April 1 next year, with the price at municipal level increasing by 43.55% from July 1.
Chromium secures increased share of SA mining revenue

Chromium accounted for 8% of South Africa’s mining revenue in June 2024, says PWC South Africa lead economist: macroanalysis Dr Christie Viljoen, up from 5% in 2023. Quoting Statistics South Africa data, Viljoen showed that platinum group metals dropped from 28% in 2023, to 22% this year, with coal down from 27%, to 24%.

Diversified natural resources producer Eurasian Resources Group’s (ERG’s) Metalkol tailings reprocessing site, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has officially started The Copper Mark assurance process, which ERG says “reinforces its commitment to sustainable development”. The Copper Mark is an assurance framework launched in 2020 to address growing international demand for the responsible sourcing and production of minerals, promoting best practice across the copper, nickel, molybdenum and zinc value chains.
