 Desperate family members of illegal miners believed to number in the hundreds waited outside a disused mine shaft in South Africa on Friday in the hope of their loved ones emerging from the hole in the ground. The miners are in a standoff with police, who have blocked their supplies of food and water and are trying to force them out to arrest them for illegally entering the abandoned mine in search of leftover gold - a common problem in South Africa.

Mines supplying coal for steelmaking will face new pressure over methane emissions as a United Nations watchdog expands its work. The International Methane Emissions Observatory will extend a program that currently alerts oil and gas producers and governments to releases of the greenhouse gas detected by satellite, according to a report published Friday.

The JSE has decided to impose a public censure on Thabi Leoka, the former independent nonexecutive director of listed companies Remgro, Netcare and Anglo American Platinum, along with a fine of R500 000, for failing to provide proof of a qualification she had previously claimed to have obtained. The JSE has also banned Leoka from serving as a director or officer of a publicly listed company for five years.

Diversified miner Rio Tinto has committed $16-million to the Makira Natural Park’s Reducing Emissions From Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD+) project, in northern Madagascar, through a new partnership with nonprofit organisation the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and conservation marketing organisation Everland. The REDD+ project also tackles forest-related activities that protect the climate, namely sustainable management of forests and the conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.

Aim-listed Greatland Gold’s $475-million acquisition of the Telfer and Havieron assets, in Australia, from gold major Newmont is nearing completion, with a conclusion date set for early December. Newmont is selling the mines as part of a noncore asset divesture plan following its 2023 acquisition of Newcrest.

Barloworld is in talks with a group of investors that includes a unit of Saudi Arabia’s Zahid Group about the acquisition of the African distributor of Caterpillar Inc. equipment. Exploration and development company Osisko Metals has announced an updated mineral resource estimate (MRE) for the Gaspé copper project, near Murdochville, in Quebec. The updated estimate includes pit-constrained resources comprising 824-million tonnes grading 0.34% copper-equivalent of indicated category and 670-million tonnes grading 0.38% copper-equivalent of inferred category.

South Africa’s gold and coal sectors were the only sectors to post decreases in production for September and the situation is unlikely to turn around markedly in the near term. Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) this week reported that the South African mining industry’s production had increased by 4.7% year-on-year in September, but that coal production had decreased by 4.4% and gold production by 3.7%.
