“The sun is finally shining on us,” an upbeat Orion Minerals CEO Errol Smart enthused during an Australia/South Africa webinar on Wednesday, when he outlined how South Africa has become one of the world’s most compelling short-term investment stories. Predicting that this country's investment narrative would super heat over the next couple of weeks, he pointed out how strongly this was advancing Orion’s Prieska copper project, where trial mining has been under way for some time, as well as Orion's high-grade Okiep copper project, which is following closely behind.
Sanea appoints Msimanga as secretary-general

The South African National Energy Association (Sanea) has appointed Xolile Msimanga as its new secretary-general, succeeding Wendy Poulton, who stepped down from the role, but remains on the board for another term of office. In a media release, the association says Msimanga brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to Sanea.
Aton further develops Abu Marawat gold concession with promising results

TSX-V-listed gold exploration and mining company Aton Resources has recently carried out further sampling and mapping programmes over several regional targets at the company’s Abu Marawat Concession-retained exploration areas in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. This ongoing exploration programme has so far resulted in 258 selective grab and non-selective surface channel collected from the Black Gaharish, Bohlog, Kab Amira, Semna and Zeno prospect areas within the concession.

Diamond Miner De Beers has announced that entries for the 2024 Shining Light Awards (SLA) jewellery design competition are officially open. The competition falls under the De Beers Group Designers Initiative (DBGDI), a youth beneficiation skills development initiative aimed at inspiring, igniting and enabling young jewellers with “world-class” jewellery design and manufacturing skills in each of the De Beers Group diamond-producing countries – Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa.

Executive Mayor of Tshwane Cilliers Brink City of Tshwane pushing ahead with plan to procure 1 000 MW by 2026

The City of Tshwane is signalling its intention to proceed with plans to procure and/or revive 1 000 MW of electricity generation capacity by 2026 as part of a strategy aimed at improving security of supply and reducing its dependency on Eskom. Executive Mayor Cilliers Brink told delegates attending the inaugural Tshwane Energy Summit that the city was seeking to find a way to partner with independent power producers (IPPs), as it was not in a financial position to pursue generation projects on its own.
Diamcor seeks to extend closing of second tranche of revised private placement

Diamond mining company Diamcor Mining is seeking to extend the closing of the second tranche of its non-brokered revised private placement following its announcement on June 4 that it had closed the first tranche. The company previously indicated that the original offering, announced on May 1, would be oversubscribed. Diamcor is therefore seeking additional time to accommodate and finalise the documentation and related required items for several additional interested investors.
Namibia to have its own satellite tracking and data reception facility

The development of a satellite ground segment complex in Namibia has been approved by the Namibia Infrastructure Development and Investment Fund (NIDIF) management enterprise, Eos Capital. The development of the complex will be led by satellite service provider and now also emerging space satellite services sector infrastructure developer Q-KON Namibia (part of the South African Q-KON group). Q-KON Namibia is licensed by the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia. The project is dubbed the Namibia Space Port, although it will, as currently described, not actually be a space port. Strictly speaking, this term refers to a place from which spacecraft are launched from, and sometimes also return to, Earth.
Taseko restarts mining at Gibraltar Taseko restarts mining at Gibraltar

Midtier copper miner Taseko Mines is resuming operations at its Gibraltar mine, in British Columbia, on Wednesday, as a labour agreement have been ratified. The company announced earlier this week that it had reached an agreement with the union representing workers at Gibraltar. The new agreement will be in place until May 31, 2027.

Featuring enhanced load-carrying capacity and improved driver comfort and convenience features, automotive company Ford South Africa has begun the introduction of the new Transit Custom commercial vehicle range. The Transit Custom launches in South Africa with the Base Long Wheelbase Van initially, with additional derivatives to follow later this year.
