Serabi commissions Coringa classification plant

Gold mining and development company Serabi Gold reports that, based on the operating progress achieved throughout December, the classification plant at its 100%-owned Coringa gold operation, in Pará State, Brazil, is now fully commissioned. With the commissioning of the Coringa plant, Serabi expect the fourth quarter to be its best operational quarter since 2020.

India, the world's second-largest gold consumer and a major importer, is re-examining a surge in gold imports that widened the country's trade deficit to a record in November and pushed the rupee to an all-time low, government sources told Reuters earlier this week.

Panama President sees no environmental threat from copper at closed First Quantum mine

The Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) reports that the Product Testing Institute (PTI), near Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape, is now the only independent facility in South Africa approved to test tyres to international standards after it received ISO 17025 accreditation from the South African National Accreditation System (Sanas). Moreover, it is the only accredited independent facility in either Africa or the Southern Hemisphere that can offer these specific tests.

Shipping industry’s $188bn binge cuts space to make new vessels

The biggest vessel-ordering program since the eve of the global financial crisis is putting a squeeze on the shipbuilding industry’s capacity to construct new vessels. Owners plowed more than $188-billion into newbuilds in the first 11 months of the year, on course for the strongest pace in terms of both value and capacity since 2007, according to Clarkson Research Services Ltd, a unit of the world’s largest shipbroker. Two of the world’s three largest shipbuilders say customers would need to wait until 2028 to receive new ships ordered today.

JSE-listed logistics company Grindrod, in a December 19 pre-closing trading update, said its focus going forward would be to drive growth in bulk handling, container handling, logistics capability and rail and transport, adding that demand for Grindrod's logistics service offering and its long-term business fundamentals remain strong. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) margin in its Port and Terminals segment remained healthy at 35% this year, down from 42% in 2023.
